About Rutland Choral Society
Rutland Choral Society has been going for over 50 years!
Rutland Choral Society is open to all who love singing and appreciate the benefits of singing in a choir. Singing helps forge social bonds and acts as an excellent ice-breaker! Music-making creates a strong sense of well-being, both physically and mentally. The feeling of achievement of collective endeavour after an event, be it rehearsal or performance, is tremendous, given the human need for belonging and union.
We are led by our talented MD Jamie Conway and accompanied by Ivan Linford (see their biographies) and under their leadership there is nothing we can’t achieve! It has been a privilege to enjoy the company of well-known international professional musicians who perform at our concerts. We have even been lucky enough to have had a work especially written for us and we gave a world premier performance!
We are a very friendly and socially active group. Our concerts are followed by a party for choir, audience and all concerned. New Year is always celebrated with a large choir dinner to which all our non-singing partners are invited. In the summer we enjoy a wonderful happy social evening, where those members feeling brave perform solos, duets, poems, juggling or whatever party pieces they might want to show off to their friends. A Great Evening!
3 concerts each year are our norm – Spring, Summer and Christmas. Our Spring Concert is often a whole work, whilst our Summer Concert tends to be lighter and varied. Christmas rounds off our singing year with carols and other seasonal items, so loved by our audiences. We also give special performances for selected charities, weddings etc.
We have sung with orchestras and jazz bands. In 2019 the High Sheriff of Rutland requested us to sing at her special thanksgiving service in Peterborough Cathedral. We were thrilled to repeat this honour at the request of the High sheriff in March 2023.
Whether you are an experienced singer or someone who hasn’t sung since leaving school, you will find your musical knowledge increasing at every rehearsal, whilst at the same time having fun and making friends with like-minded people. As one of our choir members put it: "there can't be many choirs around that are as inclusive, embracing, social, loving and fun as RCS: I feel so lucky - we are all one big family aren't we?!"
